Potassium alum is a natural product derived from nature. The material is in deposits fled into the Earth's crust. It is commonly found around volcanoes and fumaroles. In addition, recently, the potassium alum highest quality would be in the Andes in South America, but also large deposits of potassium alum are generally extracted from Tennesse, Egypt, Nevada and Arizona, United States. Potassium alum is formed naturally when precipitated sulfur springs or fumaroles interact with clay minerals or coal containing pyrite or marcasite.



Natural potassium alum is usually translucent crystalline view with veins or fractures as you can enjoy on the photo below.





To obtain alum from alunite, it must go through a process consisting of five steps beginning with step calcination, followed by efflorescence, supplemented by leaching with sulfuric acid, and finally a method of filtration.


When calcined alunite is, there is a thermal decomposition. The mineral is decomposed then exposed to air. By efflorescence, it forms a fine white crystalline powder. This powder is then subjected to a leaching process with sulfuric acid. This product will be used as a basis for synthesizing alum to form component: [Kal (SO4) 2 • 12 (H2O)]. During the leaching process may be added aluminum hydroxide and potassium sulphate in order to complete the missing elements in the base.


For example, one can add aluminum trihydrate for solidification of the product or to give it a more natural appearance or somewhat crystalline say because it is a cosmetic opacifying agent. Potassium sulphate is added usually to supplement the balance aluminum and potassium. The final product is a solid and somewhat opaque alum. Once cooled solution it shows a whitish mass commercially called alum stone. The aqueous solution of alum may also be molded into a specific shape in order to satisfy particular requirements.
